The Special School is an important segment of our activities in Mexico. This school is really 3 schools in one, namely; 1. School for the mentally impaired, 2. School for the physically impaired, and 3. School for the hearing impaired. The school has a total enrollment of approximately 100 students. Their ages range from 3 to 18. It is amazing how these students respont to the school's curriculum.
We have been helping this school since 1991. Each trip to Mexico, we have made it a practice to give the Director a gift of $100.00. In addition to the funds, we provide such items as: wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, paint, educational toys, teaching aids, all kinds of school supplies, diapers, tape players & recorders, and carpentry equipment,
The Director and staff have a never ending struggle to have sufficient supplies for teaching and to keep the bus and other equipment running. The government furnishes the buildings and salaries for the teachers, and not much else. The staff are a very dedicated group of teachers. They do so much, many times with so little.
